Sbaraglia was a colleague of Malpighi at Bologna University who was opposed to him on academic and probably also family grounds. In 1659 Malpighi’s brother Bartolommeo had killed Giovanni Girolamo Sbaraglia’s older brother, Tommaso, for reasons unrelated to academic affairs.
